Phu Quoc authorities are hoping for the resumption of direct flights to India to boost tourism as wealthy Indian families have begun to organize weddings on the island.

Huynh Quang Hung, chairman of Phu Quoc City, told Madan Mohan Sethi, the Indian consul general in HCMC at a meeting Monday that the island, apart from the recent lavish weddings, has also become an increasingly popular destination among Indians.

A direct service between Phu Quoc and New Delhi was launched in 2022, but suspended a year later due to low demand, he said as cited by Kien Giang Province's official portal.

Phu Quoc received 32,000 Indian tourists last year and 12,000 so far this year.

In the first quarter there were over 500,000 foreign visitors, a 200% increase year-on-year.
