Singapore-flagged container ship Interasia Pursuit and a barge collided on the Dong Nai River in southern Vietnam Thursday, causing nine containers on the latter to fall overboard.

The 23,000-ton Singaporean ship was carrying 468 containers from the SP- ITC International Container Terminal in HCMC's Thu Duc City to Port Klang in Malaysia.

Shortly after leaving the port at around 2 p.m. it brushed against SP-ITC 01, which was headed for the container terminal with 63 containers.

The terminal is operated by the International Trade and Transport Joint Stock Company.

At the time of the collision there were heavy rains and strong winds.

There were no casualties, but the barge sustained damage to its port side hull.

The Interasia Pursuit did not report any damage.

Ngo Quang Hung, deputy director of the HCMC Maritime Port Authority, said the containers that fell into the river were empty.

The authority deployed boats and canoes, which recovered eight of the nine containers from the water.

The remaining one broke open and is suspected to have sunk. Salvage efforts are ongoing to ensure it does not affect traffic.

The collision did not result in any oil spill.
