A group of six Malaysian female tourists have been asked to write an apology letter after waving their national flag in the Taj Mahal complex of India.

The incident happened on Feb. 15 as the tourists accompanied by a tour guide waved their national flag while standing on the pathway near the central tank on Taj Mahal premises, Hindustan Times reported.

Promotional, commercial and canvassing activities are banned on the Taj Mahal premises.

Upon being questioned they claimed they did not know about the restrictions at the complex.

They were allowed to go after submitting a written apology, The Star reported.

The Taj Mahal Complex is a funerary-religious complex, commissioned by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in 1632 CE to house the tomb of his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal.

The mausoleum is at the center of 17 ha of formal gardens with a mosque and guest house.

Although mobile phones are allowed now, tourists cannot carry other items.
