Construction began on an air traffic control center in Ho Chi Minh City on Thursday to replace a dilapidated facility at the city's international airport Tan Son Nhat.

The new VND1.5-trillion (US$61.3-million) center, with its main investor being the Vietnam Air Traffic Management Corporation (VATM), is expected to be completed in May 2025. It will guide planes for takeoff and landing at Tan Son Nhat Airport, the largest in Vietnam, and the southern region's major hub for both commercial and cargo air traffic.

The facility at the airport in Tan Binh District will include a main operation building, an electrical station building, two antenna towers and other infrastructure.

The center will replace the existing HCMC air traffic control center while also helping to provide access control to the upcoming Long Thanh airport south of the city, as well as the same services for Tan Son Nhat.

The new center, with its modern equipment and systems, will help improve flight operation capabilities while ensuring safety and high-quality, according to the VATM.

It will also play an important role in national defense and home security, VATM said.
