All vehicles, except those with capacities of over 20 tons, are allowed to pass Mong Sen viaduct on an expressway between Hanoi and Sa Pa from Tuesday.

The viaduct in Lao Cai Province is opened to traffic on a trial basis after more than two years of construction.

It stretches 612 m long with five continuous spans, and 14 m wide with four lanes.

Work started on the project in January 2021 at a cost of VND450 billion (US$19.8 million).

According to the provincial Department of Transport, the investor will make assessments with the hope of officially putting the bridge into use by the end of the month.

The viaduct will reduce the 30-km trip from Lao Cai Town, the capital of the namesake province, to the tourist town Sa Pa by 2.5 km.

Drivers could avoid a section of National Highway 4D which has slopes that frequently suffer from landslides.

The bridge will be linked with a new road that is still under construction. That road will be connected with the Noi Bai – Lao Cai Expressway that runs to Hanoi.
