Beaches in popular tourist destinations such as Da Nang, Nha Trang, Vung Tau and Phan Thiet were flooded by a sea of people during the five-day break to mark Reunification Day and May Day holidays from April 30-May 1.

A three-kilometer-long beach at Sam Son City of Thanh Hoa along the north-central coast was packed with beach-goers right from the first day of the holiday on April 27.

According to a preliminary report from Sam Son City People's Committee, the city welcomed 905,000 visitors during this year’s holiday, an increase of more than 55,000 visitors compared to 2023.

Its tourism revenue, as the largest coastal city in ThanhHoa, was estimated at nearly VND1.9 trillion (US$74 million).

Public beaches in the central city of Da Nang were also overcrowded every afternoon. On the afternoon of April 30, the most crowded beaches were at Man Thai, Phuoc My, Pham Van Dong, and My Khe.

Most visitors flocked to the beaches after 4:30 p.m. when the sun was less intense.

Da Nang’s Department of Tourism has not yet compiled statistics on the number of tourists coming to the city for tourism during the holiday, but officials estimate a decrease in the number of tourists compared to last year due to expensive airfares.

On April 30, the weather was hot, at about 35 degrees Celsius, and Nha Trang beach was still crowded with swimmers.

Vo Quang Hoang, chairman of Khanh Hoa Hotel Association, said that by April 30, many three-to-five-star hotels in downtown city were fully booked.

"Most hotels in the province have reached occupancy rates of over 80% during the holiday," Hoang said.

Many tourists rent kayaks for VND70,000 each, with no time limit.

A lifeguard at a beach in the Hon Chong area said there are about three lifeguards on duty, working from 3 p.m. to 6:20 p.m. every day.

The family of Trinh Thi Bich Ngoc from HCMC are on a vacation in Nha Trang during the holiday.

On Tuesday, her whole family visited many local tourist attractions such as the Institute of Oceanography and Ponagar Tower.

"After swimming at Hon Chong, we enjoy NhaTrang seafood in the evening and will return home on May 1," Ngoc said, adding that although the climate in Nha Trang is hot, it is still "more comfortable" than in Ho Chi Minh City.

With a large number of beach-goers, the management board of Doi Duong beach tourist area,constantly used loudspeakers to exhort people not to litter the beach as well as remind them not to swim too far to ensure safety.

The beach's two parking lots are full.

It is estimated that the whole province welcomed over 200,000 visitors during the holiday, an increase of about 25% compared to last year.
