Most of the survivors of the deadly Hanoi house fire that killed at least 14 people on Friday suffer from respiratory burns after inhaling toxic gases, according to doctors.

Bui Hong Giang, head of the emergency department of the Transport Hospital, said doctors are focusing on an 84-year-old woman, the worst affected of the six people who managed to survive the blaze.

The other five, including a boy, are stable though they suffer from mental trauma, he said.

"The hospital is providing mental support for the victims."

Hanoi's leading public hospital Bach Mai has sent Nguyen Trung Nguyen, director of its poison control center, to the Transport Hospital to help with treating the victims.

Vice chairman of the National Assembly, Tran Quang Phuong, and Minister of Health Dao Hong Lan have visited the victims at the hospital.

The fire at the house on an alley off Trung Kinh Street in Cau Giay District started at around 0:30 a.m. on Friday.
