A temporary fishing ban has been proposed in sea regions spanning 35,000 ha around central Quang Ngai Province for seafood stocks to recover.

The southern seas of Ly Son Island; the Binh Phu, Binh Chau coasts; Sa Huynh’s Pho Khanh, Pho Thanh and Pho Chau coasts; Tinh Khe-Nghia An coasts; and the Duc Pho Town coasts will be covered by the proposal made by the province's the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.

The total areas subjected under the temporary fishing ban are around 35,000 ha, taking up over 12% of the coastal areas.

The Quang Ngai agricultural sector also proposed the province to plan the Ganh Yen seafood resource conservation zone in Binh Son District to protect its coral reef, seaweed and endangered species.

It also proposed a month-long ban from seafaring, from May 1 to 30 for coastal sea regions, along with a 3-month ban from March 1 to May 30 for highly invasive acts to capture seafood.

The province would also breed species with high economic value, native and endangered species every year, as well as restoring coral reefs, among other measures.

Quang Ngai sea regions have around 1,298 aquaculture species, including 36 endangered ones, according to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development. The capacity for sustainable harvest is at around 83,600 tons, with over 28,000 tons in coastal areas. But every year, the actual amount of harvested seafood is over 91,000 tons, with 48,500 tons being from coastal areas.
