Nearly 10 cars were completely damaged as a fire erupted at an auto garage in southern Can Tho City on Wednesday morning.

Smoke and fire started from the back area of the garage in the city's downtown district of Ninh Kieu at around 10:30 a.m. and quickly extended to the front area and the storage area where auto spare parts and equipment are kept.

Dozens of employees and mechanics attempted to extinguish the fire but failed and had to flee outside.

After 10 minutes, several fire trucks along with 10 officers and soldiers arrived at the scene.

However, due to the presence of many flammable materials and goods inside the two-story garage, the fire intensified, covering the garage spanning hundreds of square meters with large flames, causing smoke to rise dozens of meters high.

Many people living near the fire evacuated to safety.

The police cordoned off about one kilometer of Ba Thang Street, where the garage is located, for firefighting operations.

The fire was controlled more than an hour later and completely extinguished around noon. The police continued to cool the scene to prevent the fire from reigniting.

"The fire did not cause casualties but burned many cars and equipment in the workshop," said a firefighter on the operation.

Preliminary investigation shows the fire damaged two cars being repaired on the ground floor and seven on the first floor.

The second floor, which stored equipment, goods, and auto repair tools, also suffered much damage.
