Vietnam successfully defended the SEA Games men's football gold medal after beating Thailand 1-0 in the final on Sunday night.

It was a balanced final at My Dinh National Stadium in Hanoi as Vietnam and Thailand both attacked and created many chances.

Vietnam pushed forward right from the start and they had many shots toward Thailand goal. After being under pressure in the first 10 minutes, Thailand began to regain possession and the game was more balanced.

Many more chances were created by both teams but no goals were scored in the first 45 minutes.

In the second half, coach Park Hang-seo made two substitutions that later became the turning point of the game. Thailand dominated in the first 20 minutes and forced Vietnam to play lower. But after Ly Cong Hoang Anh came on, Vietnam’s midfield was able to adjust and take back control.

Vietnam started to attack more when Thailand players were low on stamina and the goal came in the 83rd minute. Nham Manh Dung, another substitution, headed the ball into the top corner after receiving a flawless cross from Phan Tuan Tai to score for Vietnam.

In the remaining minutes, Thailand put many new players on in search for an equalizer. However, Vietnam stood strong and protected the lead until the final whistle.

The 1-0 win against Thailand helped Vietnam win SEA Games 31 gold medal without conceding a goal.
