The latest SEA Games gold is the 10th regional title that Vietnamese women have bagged - having won six SEA Games gold and three Women’s AFF Cup titles earlier.
Saturday's victory at the Cam Pha Stadium in the northern province of Quang Ninh helped Vietnam move past nine regional titles won by Thailand. However, besides the Southeast Asian titles, Thailand also won one pan Asian title - the 1983 Asian Cup.
Coach Mai Duc Chung has contributed to six of Vietnam's 10 regional titles. Chung has become the most decorated football coach in the country with nine titles to his credit. Apart from the six titles with the women’s team, he also won the National Cup with Saigon and the domestic double with Binh Duong.
"This victory is really meaningful. The country had just overcome the pandemic, but we were still determined to host the SEA Games. This is also the third consecutive gold medal for the team at the SEA Games. For me, this is the most amazing and happiest moment in my coaching career," Chung said.
With the support of 16,000 home fans, Vietnam played confidently throughout the game and created many chances. However, it was only an hour into the game that Vietnam broke through with captain Huynh Nhu scoring the only goal of the game.
"Vietnamese players deserved this glory because they always gave their best in every game, every tournament. Their efforts have been rewarded with qualification for the 2023 Women’s World Cup and now the SEA Games gold medal," Chung said.
This is the fifth title with the team for Chuong Thi Kieu and Nguyen Thi Tuyet Dung. Captain Huynh Nhu also has a great chance to win her fifth Vietnam Golden Ball after her stellar performance in the latest edition of the SEA Games.
