The Michelin Guide has extended its rating system to accommodation, and six Japanese hotels joined the ranks Thursday by receiving the guide’s top honour, three keys.

Michelin released its new hotel ratings in April this year, beginning with France and followed by the U.S., Spain, and Italy.

This expansion into hotel ratings marks Japan as the fifth country to be honored.

On its official website, Michelin shows that six hotels received the top rating of three keys for providing "an extraordinary stay," while 17 others scored two keys for offering "an exceptional stay," and 85 scored one key for providing "a very special stay."

The six three-key hotels are Palace Hotel Tokyo, Four Seasons Hotel Tokyo at Otemachi, Gora Kadan, Hotel the Mitsui Kyoto, Bulgari Hotel Tokyo, and Amanemu.

According to the Michelin Guide, these evaluations are based on the following key criteria: architecture and interior design, quality of service, overall personality and character, value for the price, and the ability to offer a meaningful guest experience.
