"The country encompasses a huge array of different cultures and stunning biodiversity, from vast coral reefs to verdant rainforests. Then there’s the capital, Kuala Lumpur, a city quite literally on the up," The Telegraph wrote.
This year, Kuala Lumpur is set to elevate its status further with the completion of several skyscrapers and hotel projects. These developments are expected to enhance its global reputation as a vibrant and modern metropolis.
Visitors to Malaysia can also look forward to an array of festivals and pageants as the country assumes leadership of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) for the year.
In addition to Malaysia, two other Asian destinations made the list: Vietnam and Sri Lanka.
In Vietnam, tourists are encouraged to visit Ho Chi Minh City for concerts, cultural events, and fireworks displays, while also exploring historical and cultural landmarks in Hanoi and Hoi An.
Vietnam welcomed nearly 16 million foreign visitors as of November last year while Malaysia, named Asia's most-loved country in a survey by American finance site Insider Monkey, welcomed 22.5 million during the same period.
To compile the list, The Telegraph asked its travel experts to recommend destinations that are relatively unexplored and free from "overtourism."
The selection considered various factors, including atmosphere, culture, accommodation, flight routes, ease of access, and price. The list caters to a range of budgets, from simple package deals to luxury vacations.
Other destinations featured in the list include Italy, Colombia, Switzerland, Australia, and Ireland.
