Vietnam weightlifter wins hattrick of gold at Asian championships

Pham Thi Hong Thanh dominated the women's 64-kilogram event at the Asian Weightlifting Championships, winning three gold medals.

Thanh easily won the snatch competition Tuesday evening by lifting 91 kilograms on first try, 96 kilograms on the second, and 100 kilograms on the third to ultimately claim gold. Silver medalist Chontavin Thipwara of Thailand peaked at 91 kilograms.

In the clean and jerk competition, Thanh lifted 114 kilograms, then 117 kilograms, outperforming second placed Sarah Sarah of Indonesia, who lifted 112 kilograms.

The third gold medal was given to Thanh when she registered a total weight of 217 kilograms in two competitions, 16 kilograms more than Sarah.

She had formerly registered an all-time-best of 230 kilograms at SEA Games 31 to win gold.

The 2022 Asian Weightlifting Championships is taking place in Bahrain form Oct. 6 to 16. Before Thanh, athletes Quang Thi Tam, Nguyen Tran Anh Tuan, Lai Gia Thanh and Khong My Phuong also won gold medals for Vietnam.
