CNN Indonesia knocks Vietnam's Asian Games fall from grace

"Vietnam topped the 2023 SEA Games in Cambodia where they won 136 gold, 105 silver and 114 bronze medals. However, there seemed to be no trace of Vietnam's SEA Games greatness at Asian Games," said the CNN Indonesia website.

Vietnam have only won one gold by shooter Pham Quang Huy in the men's 10m air pistol event.

The news outlet also compared Vietnam's results with other countries in the region.

"It becomes even more sad for Vietnam when you look at other Southeast Asian countries," it said, mentioning Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore and Malaysia.

Thailand is currently the best in Southeast Asia with 10 gold, 10 silver and 19 bronze medals, ranking seventh overall.

At the 2023 Asian Games so far, Indonesia has collected five gold medals, followed by Singapore and Malaysia with three each. They are ranked 13th, 14th and 15th respectively, while Vietnam is at a lowly 19th position with one gold, three silver and 14 bronze medals.

Vietnam are also the only Southeast Asian team that did not make it past the group stage of Asian Games men's football, while Thailand, Indonesia, Myanmar all advanced.

Vietnam still have five more days until the closure of Asian Games on October 8 to improve their results.
