A woman in Thu Duc City has been fined for occupying the space under the elevated tracks of HCMC's metro line No.1 to throw a wedding party.

The woman, 46, was fined VND2.5 million (US$102.45) for violations in using roads, authorities of Linh Trung Ward announced Monday.

The fine was made after videos and photos of the wedding party emerged on social media, showing wedding pavilions established along a section of more than ten meters beneath the elevated tracks of the metro line.

The tracks run in parallel with the Hanoi Highway in Thu Duc.

Tables and chairs to serve guests were placed right on the street and the party lasted from Sunday morning until afternoon.

Many people believe the fine is too low and it came only after the party was over, which they said was lax.

According to existing rules, people can occupy part of the sidewalk and roadside to organize wedding parties and funerals for 48 hours or 72 hours in several particular cases when permitted by local authorities.

Metro line No.1, the first of Ho Chi Minh City, is scheduled for completion early next year and for commercial use in July 2024. It runs 19.7 km between District 1 and Thu Duc City with three underground and 11 elevated stations.
