A section of the arterial road connecting Nha Trang beach town with Cam Ranh airport has been packed with nails, causing many flat tires.

On Wednesday morning, Phan Duy's motorbike got a flat tire as he drove from Cam Ranh to Nha Trang in central Khanh Hoa Province.

He encountered the accident on Cu Hin Pass.

The tire was pierced by a nail of more than three centimeters long. He had to walk the motorbike for over one kilometer to reach a garage. It cost him VND100,000 ($4.24) to fix the tire.

"As I walked along the pass, I saw several nails scattered in the middle of the road. They are around three to four centimeters long and have both of their heads cut," said Duy.

He also noticed phone numbers of mobile motorbike repair services advertised on nearby rocks.

Many other commuters have experienced similar incidents in recent days.

Nguyen Viet, a staff member at a local resort, said the nails have appeared along the pass for around one week now.

One day Viet saw six people walking their flat-tired motorbikes past the resort, with a car forced to get a new tire tube for VND600,000.

Residents have volunteered to collect the nails but could not get them all, he said.

Nguyen Van Dan, director of Khanh Hoa's Transport Department, said it has collaborated with police to review security camera footage and determine who had spread the nails.
