Hanoi distributes $5.3M to support victims of deadly apartment fire

Each of the 88 survivors received VND700 million.

Three people who were injured and hospitalized for 3-7 days got another VND300 million each, totaling to VND900 million. The 33 people who were hospitalized for over 7 days got VND400 million each, totaling to VND13.2 billion. One receiving severe, life-threatening injuries got VND1 billion.

Orphans will get bankbooks, with one who lost both of their parents receiving VND2 billion, and four others who lost one parent getting VND1 billion each. 22 children aged under 16, whose parents are alive, will get VND600 million each.

Support money regarding funerary rites and memorials for family members of 56 dead victims in the fire amounted to VND500 million each, totaling VND28 billion.

Before the official money distribution, Thanh Xuan District had spent VND6.1 billion of donations to support the affected families, at VND40 million for each person. Another VND9 billion from Hanoi’s budget was also spent to help with resettlement and tuition fees.

The fundraising committee for victims of the fire said the donated money amounts to over VND132 billion. After distributing VND130 billion, the other VND2.2 billion would be used to deal with ensuing issues, environmental cleanup and disease prevention at the site of the fire.

Several survivors of the fire said they were either renting at other places or staying at relatives’ houses while the mini apartment is still under lockdown.

They said they would use the support money to look for other places to live as the building’s structure is no longer safe to live in.

The Hanoi mini apartment fire on Khuong Ha Street, Thanh Xuan District in mid-September resulted in 56 deaths and left 37 injured.

The owner of the building has been detained for four months pending an investigation into the incident.
