Six Vietnamese universities find a place in the 2024 Times Higher Education World University Rankings, but three of them have dropped down the list from last year.

The six are Duy Tan University in Da Nang, Ton Duc Thang University in Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi University of Science and Technology, Vietnam National University in Hanoi, Vietnam National University in HCMC, and Hue University.

Duy Tan and Ton Duc Thang are ranked highest, but have slid from 401-500 last year to 601-800.

The Vietnam National University in Hanoi has also dropped, from 1,001-1,200 to 1,201-1,500.

The other three schools remain in the group of 1,501+.

This year there are 1,904 universities in 108 countries and regions in the rankings, which are based on 18 indicators that measure an institution's performance across five areas: teaching, research environment, research quality, industry, and international outlook.

The University of Oxford in the U.K. tops the ranking for the eighth year in a row, but others in the top five have switched places. Stanford University in the U.S. moves up to second place pushing Harvard University down to fourth.

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology climbed two places to third this year. The University of Cambridge slips to fifth place, after being in joint third place last year.

The highest new entry is Italy's Catholic University of the Sacred Heart, ranked in the 301-350 bracket. The majority of schools joining the ranking for the first time are in Asia.

The U.S. is the most represented country overall, with 169, and also the most represented in the top 200 (56).

With 91 institutions, India is now the fourth most represented nation, overtaking China (86).

Four countries entered the ranking for the first time, Kosovo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, North Macedonia and Armenia. Last year all the new entrants had been from Africa.
