My wife remains unsatisfied even though I give her over US$8,000 a month

I give my wife VND200 million (US$8,058) every month from my VND500 million salary, yet she continues to ask for more money and requests for designer handbags.

I am 28 years old and have recently returned to Vietnam after nearly a decade of studying and working in the U.S. My wife and I have known each other for almost 10 years, and we got married two years ago.

I currently work as a senior manager for a foreign tech corporation in Hanoi, earning a monthly salary of about VND500 million after taxes. My wife, on the other hand, works for a government agency, also based in Hanoi.

Each month, I give her VND200 million to manage our family expenses, which cover food, utilities, entertainment, shopping, and childcare. Since we own our home, rent isn’t a concern. My wife also saves and invests any surplus when investment opportunities arise. The remaining part of my salary is allocated for supporting my parents, my personal expenses, and my own investments.

Lately, however, my wife has become increasingly discontent and frequently complains that I’m not giving her enough. She insists that I should give her at least half of my monthly income and has also suggested that I should cut back on my luxury purchases. Whenever I buy something, she gets upset. Meanwhile, despite already owning a collection of designer handbags, she often requests more money to buy additional ones. When I decline, thinking it’s unnecessary, she withdraws and doesn’t speak to me for several days.

What should I do to maintain harmony in our family while helping my wife understand my perspective?
