In fiscal year 2023, the country’s biggest online shopping platform – run by billionaire Jeff Bezos –secured over 11,000 H-1B approvals, representing 2.9% of the total H-1B visas granted that year, according to a recent report by Pew Research Center.
Other leading employers in the H-1B program are specialized in IT and business services, such as Cognizant Technology Solutions, Infosys, Tata Consultancy Services.
Google, in the fifth place, employed almost 5,550 people in 2023, less than half compared to Amazon.
Microsoft followed with nearly 4,800 workers, with Apple coming right behind at 3,800.
Among 30 companies included in the study of Pew Research Center, Tesla was among those with the fewest foreign hires at almost 1,100, accounting for 0.3% of total H-1B approvals.
The H-1B visa program, introduced in 1990, allows U.S. employers to hire foreign professionals for specialized roles requiring advanced expertise. Applicants must hold at least a bachelor’s degree or an equivalent qualification in a relevant field.
H-1B approvals are initially granted for three years, with an option to extend up to six years. However, if an employer sponsors a worker’s application for permanent residency, the visa duration may be extended beyond the six-year limit.
In 2023, approximately 400,000 H-1B applications were approved for highly skilled foreign professionals. Of these, 65% were renewals, while the rest were new approvals for first-time employment.
