Vietnam Airlines and Vietjet Air have joined a growing list of Asian carriers that ban the use of power banks on flights.

The decision follows an incident in which a Hong Kong Airlines flight from China's Hangzhou was forced to make an emergency landing on March 21 after a power bank in a passenger's bag exploded and caught fire.

Both Vietnamese carriers said power banks, which airlines do not allow in checked baggage, must be removed from carry-on baggage, switched off and stored in an easily visible spot.

Passengers are prohibited from charging electronic devices including power banks aboard flights.

Singapore Airlines, Thai Airways, Eva Air, and AirAsia already ban the use of power banks on board.
