Miss Universe to verify result of Vietnamese winner amid controversy

On Tuesday, Miss Universe wrote on its fanpage that has 13 million followers: "Thank you for bringing concerns about the 2023 Miss Universe Vietnam competition to our attention – we hear you and we’re looking into it."

"We’re working closely with our franchise partner to learn more about what happened and ensure that every part of our program is, and has been, carried out with integrity," it said.

Bui Quynh Hoa was crowned the 2023 Miss Universe Vietnam in the final on September 29 in HCMC. However, this result sparked widespread online debate. Most of the audience said the 25-year-old deserved the title thanks to her great performance in the final, showing extensive experience.

Meanwhile, some were skeptical and believed Quynh Hoa was designated to be the winner from the start and received help. They said Hoa already knew the answer beforehand so she answered quickly and gave nearly identical answers to Google.

Miss Universe Vietnam has not yet commented on the incident, while Quynh Hoa denied rumors o getting help to win the title.

She said she was sad and hurt as she was trying her best. However, Hoa said she considered this a lesson to become stronger and more resilient. She believes her relentless efforts will gain recognition and respect from the audience.

When asked to define the beauty of confidence during the 2023 Miss Universe Vietnam contest final on September 29, she instantly answered, saying that the concept could be defined as a woman being confident in herself and thus, being able to lead her own life.

Regarding speculations of knowing the questions in advance, Hoa said she and 18 other contestants were told about this topic by the 2023 Miss Charm Luma Russo before the final. After that, she spent a lot of time researching online.

"Google is free and no one prohibits you from learning there. I often read books and information online because it’s quick and convenient. My answer was nearly identical to Google because I have learned that before," Hoa said.

She also added that in her third time contesting Miss Universe Vietnam, she has prepared well by improving her English and presentation skills.

She also practiced interviews with experts and personal coaches, which explained her quick and articulate answers.

Nguyen Thi Thuy Nga, head of jury, said four out of five judges chose Hoa to be the winner. Nga considered Hoa is an all-rounder as she has beauty, fitness, skills and is ready to go on the journey as the new beauty queen.

Hoa, 25, is a model and businesswoman. She won the title of the 2022 Supermodel International contest and competed in various beauty pageants before being crowned the 2023 Miss Universe Vietnam.
