The crime was uncovered as the police received reports from local people about a couple in the state, which has been noted by the World Bank as having high poverty rates, seen using a brand new iPhone, according to the South China Morning Post.
As the police investigated the suspected couple, the mother admitted the crime, saying that she and her husband had sold their infant baby to a woman living in the same village, aiming to use the money made to buy an iPhone, travel around, and shoot for Instagram reels.
Both her and the buyer were arrested after that, while the father fled.
Authorities found out that the couple had also tried to sell their other seven-year-old child, but the plan did not become reality.
