Saigon Saigon Bar, once a wartime press hub, has been named one of the 20 best rooftop bars in the world by British magazine Time Out.

It is situated on the ninth floor of the Caravelle Hotel in Lam Son Square in District 1.

"A thrilling vista across one of Asia's most vivacious cities, with the sun dipping behind ramshackle streets dotted with colonial-era landmarks and neon-lit towers," is how the magazine describes it.

Opened in 1959 alongside the Caravelle Hotel, Saigon Saigon Bar has remained unchanged since its days as a press hub during the Vietnam War when it was a gathering spot for war correspondents.

From this rooftop, Dutch freelance photojournalist Hubert Van Es took the photo of Americans scrambling aboard a helicopter atop the Pittman Apartments at 5 p.m. on April 29, 1975, just before the fall of Saigon.

The building still stands at 22 Ly Tu Trong Street in District 1.

In an interview 20 years ago Van Es said he used a 300mm telephoto lens, his best at the time, to capture the scene from the roof of the Caravelle Hotel.

Time Out suggests: "Pretend you're a 1960s war correspondent and grab an ice-cold, tailor-brewed Saigon Special beer. Or if cocktails are your thing, a Miss Saigon makes for a colorful production."

Nguyen, a local, says he has visited the bar many times.

"It's a place with historical roots, centrally located, and perfect for introducing out-of-town friends. Many are surprised to learn about its connection to such a significant period in history."

The bar offers beautiful views, he adds.

As Vietnam commemorates 50 years of reunification, Saigon Saigon is a recommended stop for visitors interested in exploring the past.

The bar is open daily from 4 p.m. to 1 a.m. and has live music.
