Vietnam ranks 59th out of 119 economies in this year's travel and tourism development index, trailing many of its Southeast Asian neighbors due to limited tourism services and infrastructure.

It got an overall score of 3.96 points out of seven, putting it behind Singapore (13th), Indonesia (22nd), Malaysia (35th), and Thailand (47th), in the biennial ranking released on Tuesday by the World Economic Forum.

The index measures the factors and policies that enable sustainable and resilient development of tourism like business environment, safety and health conditions, price competitiveness, air transport infrastructure, tourist services and infrastructure, natural resources, and environmental, socioeconomic and demand pressures.

Vietnam performed well in price competitiveness, safety and security, air transport, port infrastructure, and natural resources.

But it faces a number of challenges such as tourism infrastructure, prioritization of policy and enabling conditions for travel and tourism and environmental sustainability, the report said.

The U.S. tops the ranking followed by Spain, Japan and France.

In 2022, Vietnam ranked 52nd out of 117 economies in the tourism development index.
