A passenger of United States ultra-low cost airline Spirit Airlines is under criminal investigation for inviting flight attendants to join the "mile high club."

James Warren Finnister, 47, was arrested last week and is facing criminal charges for "interfering with flight crew members, sexually harassing and assaulting flight attendants, and engaging in other disruptive behavior" while boarding the flight from Kentucky to Florida, New York Post reported.

Investigators said the man initially asked the chief flight attendant if she wanted to join the "mile-high club," a slang for people who have sexual intercourse on board an aircraft during a flight. He then asked the same question with a second crew member, according to Business Insider.

He is also accused of lying on the floor and requesting entry into the airplane cockpit.

According to initial investigations, the man consumed alcohol prior to the flight. If convicted, he will face a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison.
