Although they were born into fame as the children of billionaire Bill Gates and philanthropist Melinda French Gates, Jennifer, Rory, and Phoebe Gates managed to lead relatively private lives during their upbringing.

A source told People that Bill and Melinda, who divorced in 2021 after 27 years of marriage, delayed their separation until all their children had graduated from high school. Like their father, all three attended Lakeside School in Seattle.

In a recent interview with Indian podcaster Raj Shamani, Bill revealed that his children would inherit less than 1% of his fortune, which Forbes valued at US$107.5 billion as of April 14.

Here is a closer look at the Gates children.

Born on April 26, 1996, Jennifer, 28, holds a degree in human biology from Stanford University and a master’s degree in public health from Columbia University. In May 2024, she graduated from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and began her pediatric residency there.

Alongside her medical career, Jennifer is a professional show jumper. Her father has supported her passion extensively, including purchasing a US$18 million horse farm in California and several parcels of land in Wellington, Florida, to build an equestrian facility.

She married fellow equestrian Nayel Nassar on Oct. 16, 2021. Bill and Melinda reunited for the wedding and shared separate tributes to their daughter on social media. In February 2023, reports surfaced that the couple had purchased a US$51 million penthouse in New York City. They welcomed their first daughter, Leila, in March 2023, and their second daughter, Mia, in October 2023.

In a video interview, Bill Gates shared that he hopes to "create an adventure" for his grandchildren. "The relationship of a grandparent to a child is a nice one because it's kind of in addition to what they have with their parents," he said. "It's kind of a supporting role, and in that way, it's kind of simple. It can be a lot of fun stuff."

In a 2020 interview with Sidelines magazine, Jennifer reflected on growing up in privilege: "I was born into a huge situation of privilege," she said. "I think it's about using those opportunities and learning from them to find things that I'm passionate about and hopefully make the world a little bit of a better place."

Rory John Gates, 25, the couple’s only son, was born on May 23, 1999, and named after Melinda's late friend John Neilson.

He graduated from the University of Chicago in 2022, earning a double major and a master’s degree in four years. He is now pursuing a PhD at the Institute of World Politics and working as an analyst for the Afghanistan War Commission, according to his LinkedIn profile.

Rory maintains a low public profile, with private social media accounts and limited public appearances. In a 2017 essay for Time magazine, Melinda described her son as "compassionate and curious," "intelligent and well-read," and praised his advocacy for gender equality. "Across 18 years of conversations, sharp observations and everyday actions, he's demonstrated his belief that gender equality is something worth standing up for," she wrote.

In May 2024, Rory made a rare public appearance when he accompanied his mother to a White House State Dinner. A Puck report from 2023 suggested that Rory had become a "rich target for Democratic social-climbers, influence-peddlers, and all variety of money chasers" in Washington, D.C.

Phoebe Adele Gates, 22, the youngest child, was born on Sept. 14, 2002.

After graduating from high school in 2021, she attended Stanford University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Human Biology in June 2024. In an interview with Nylon, she said she was motivated to finish her degree so she could be present for her mother, who delivered the commencement speech at her graduation.

Phoebe has been vocal on social and political issues, attending the UN General Assembly with her mother and visiting Rwanda with Partners in Health, a nonprofit funded by the Gates Foundation. She frequently writes about gender equality for Vogue and Teen Vogue and speaks at philanthropic events.

She also has a strong interest in fashion, having interned at British Vogue and attended fashion weeks in Copenhagen, New York, and Paris. This passion led to her cofounding Phia, a sustainable fashion tech platform launched on April 24, alongside her college roommate Sophia Kianni.

Her father told The New York Times he was relieved she did not ask him to fund the startup: "I thought, 'Oh boy, she's going to come and ask,'" Bill said. "I would have kept her on a short leash and be doing business reviews, which I would have found tricky, and I probably would have been overly nice, but wondered if it was the right thing to do. Luckily, it never happened."

The most public of the Gates siblings, Phoebe has over 450,000 followers on Instagram and is active on TikTok, where she often shares glimpses of her upbringing, including strict household rules around technology. In an interview with Bustle, she recalled creating a cardboard decoy to sneak her phone past bedtime restrictions.

However, growing up as the daughter of one of the world's richest tech billionaires has come with challenges. In the Netflix documentary "What's Next? The Future With Bill Gates," she shared that she lost friends due to conspiracy theories falsely claiming her father implanted microchips through Covid vaccines.
