The Thai government has reassured tourists that it remains safe to visit despite the deadly earthquake in neighboring Myanmar last week that caused widespread damage across parts of Southeast Asia including Bangkok.

"Travel, hotels, and events proceed normally. Inspections are ongoing for safety assurance. Tourist police monitor key sites," Thailand's Tourism Minister Sorawong Thienthong said in a government post on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Officials confirmed that no tourists were injured and no tourist sites in Thailand were affected by the quake.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand acted swiftly to ease concerns, issuing a statement on Saturday confirming that the situation in Bangkok had returned to normal.

"Businesses resumed operations, and tourist attractions, as well as various convention centers, are open as usual. However, periodic assessments will continue to ensure maximum safety," the TAT said on social media.

"Hotels, restaurants, and entertainment venues are operating as usual, and transport services remain unaffected. There is no reason to put travel plans on hold," said Anil Punjabi, a national executive committee member of the Travel Agents' Federation of India (TAFI), as quoted by The Times of India.

Thai authorities added that popular destinations such as Phuket, Pattaya, and others were not impacted by the earthquake.

The death toll in Bangkok has risen to 17 after a 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck central Myanmar on Friday, with tremors strongly felt in the capital of Bangkok and other parts of Vietnam and China.

Many foreign tourists in Bangkok were left shaken as tremors swayed high-rise buildings, cracked walls, and caused water to spill from rooftop swimming pools.

Between January and March 16, Thailand welcomed 8.3 million international visitors, a 3.9% increase year-on-year. The country targets 39 to 40 million foreign arrivals by the end of this year.
