The Association of Thai Travel Agents is calling on the next Thai government to waive visa fees for visitors from China to fulfill this year's target.

Thailand aims to attract five million Chinese tourists by the end of this year, but Southeast Asia's second-largest economy has received only around 1.6 million visitors in the first six months of this year, The Star newspaper reported.

Thailand's visa application fee including service charges costs 1,912-2,390 baht (US$55-68) per person while the visa-on-arrival fee stands at 2,000 baht ($65).

Other Southeast Asian countries are trying to lure more Chinese tourists post reopening.

Malaysia, for example, offers easier visa procedures that take only 1-3 days to process, with visa fee of around $28 per person.
