Malaysia ranked among the top 10 countries in Asia-Pacific with the highest growth in international tourist arrivals in the first quarter of 2025, according to a report by the United Nations Tourism Organization.

The country recorded a 10% year-on-year increase in tourist arrivals compared to the same period in 2024, as reported in the May edition of the World Tourism Barometer.

In the first quarter of this year Malaysia had led Southeast Asia with 10.1 million tourist arrivals, followed by Thailand with 9.55 million, Vietnam with six million, and Singapore with 4.3 million.

Industry insiders attributed Malaysia's strong performance to relaxed visa policies, improved infrastructure, and intensified tourism promotion efforts, positioning the country as the region's tourism frontrunner.

The Malaysian government has extended its visa-free policy for Chinese tourists for another five years, with the possibility of extending it further until 2036, Bernama reported, citing Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.

The visa-free entry for Indian tourists has also been extended until 2026.

A digital visa system, enhanced air connectivity, and better coordination between airports and travel agencies have also contributed to a more seamless travel experience, experts said.

Tourism Malaysia has set a target of 31.3 million tourist arrivals and 125.5 billion ringgit in tourism receipts for 2025, representing projected year-on-year growth of 25% and 23%, respectively.
