Indonesia, Southeast Asia's largest economy, welcomed 9.1 million foreign tourists in the first eight months of this year, marking a 20% increase year-on-year, according to official data.

This marks the highest number of international arrivals Indonesia has recorded for the January-August period since 2020, though it remains lower than pre-pandemic levels, Jakarta Globe reported citing data from the Central Statistics Agency.

Indonesia saw 10.7 million foreign visitors during the same period in 2019, the year before the Covid-19 pandemic.

Indonesia's foreign tourist arrivals now lagged behind those of neighboring Southeast Asian countries.

Thailand welcomed over 22 million foreign tourists between January and August, while Vietnam and Singapore recorded more than 11 million visitors.

Indonesia has set a target to attract 17 million foreign visitors this year, after receiving 11.7 million last year.
