Times Square, a tourist hub and major commercial intersection and home to luxury shops and restaurants in New York City, has been rated the world's worst tourist trap, a study reveals.

To compile the list, online language learning platform Preply analyzed visitor reviews for over 80 popular tourist destinations across the globe, identifying the number of reviews using negative words like "overrated," "tourist trap" and "underwhelming."

Times Square received a whopping 1,761 reviews with such words.

Times Square is brightly lit by numerous digital billboards and advertisements as well as businesses offering day and night service.

Over 460,000 pedestrians walk through Times Square on its busiest days, and it is the location of the famous New Year's Eve ball drop which takes place annually on Dec. 31.

Checkpoint Charlie in Germany was rated the second worst tourist trap in the world, followed by the Eiffel Tower in France and The Little Mermaid in Denmark.
