The Malaysian Aviation Commission recently announced it will increase the passenger service charge for international flights from Malaysia's airports to ASEAN countries starting from June 1.

Regardless of the destination, international travelers will need to pay RM73 (US$15.50) for flights departing from Kuala Lumpur International Airport’s Terminal 1 while those leaving via Terminal 2 and other airports will have to pay RM50 service charge, according to Free Malaysia Today.

The new rates will be enforced until Dec. 31, 2026.

Currently, the service fee for flights to ASEAN countries costs only RM35 regardless of whether passengers depart from the airport’s Terminal 1 or 2 while only those going to non-ASEAN countries must pay RM73, The Straits Times reported.

The commission assured that the revised fees will not be applied to flight tickets issued before June 1, 2024.

It hoped that the revised fees will help the aviation sector recover post pandemic.

Passenger service charges are levied on each traveler at airports to cover security and maintenance expenses.
