Sun Guo Shan has set himself an unusual and ambitious goal: to scale 50 of China's most famous peaks on his hands.

China News shared the story about the 38-year-old education professional from Shandong Province who realized the significance of physical health when the Covid-19 pandemic swept across the globe.

Determined to promote fitness while paying tribute to China's mountainous landscapes, he embarked on this extraordinary challenge.

According to Oddity Central, Sun began training for his hand-climbing journey in April 2023 and started climbing in May 2024, beginning with smaller peaks.

By November that year he had gained widespread recognition after a viral video showcased his ascent of Haibat, the highest peak in Wudang Mountain in Hubei Province, standing over 1,600 meters tall, while performing a handstand.

Speaking with China News, Sun said, "Every Chinese person has a love and dream for martial arts," explaining this passion was a key motivator in his undertaking.

In December 2024 he spent five hours climbing 999 steps on Tianmen Mountain in Zhangjiajie, Hunan Province, on his hands.

It was his 34th peak and his most challenging this far. "I fell nearly 100 times," Sun said.

With 16 mountains left to conquer, he hopes to complete his mission by this spring and plans to submit his accomplishment for recognition by the Guinness World Records.

The tradition of handstand climbing is believed to have originated from India's Mayur Chaal or the "Peacock Walk."

Deeply rooted in ancient yoga, this practice is known for enhancing core strength, balance and stamina.

Those who practice Mayur Chaal say it mimics the graceful movements of a peacock while also promoting better digestion and offering various mental benefits.
