HCMC's District 1 wants three parking lots for motorbikes on roads near the pedestrian-only section of downtown Nguyen Hue Street.

The proposal, sent to the municipal People’s Committee, is expected to be carried out starting in 2024, with lots to be available on Saturday and Sunday nights, as well as during major events.

The parking lots would be located on certain areas of Mac Thi Buoi, Ngo Duc Ke and Hai Trieu streets, which are several minutes walk from Nguyen Hue.

The lots will provide emergency exits, and they will also be equipped with detailed plans for firefighting and prevention, as well as rescue and environmental cleanup. Vehicles would not be allowed to be parked on the sidewalks to make room for pedestrians and businesses.

Nguyen Hue Walking Street, along with the adjacent Bach Dang Wharf, are popular destinations for locals and tourists alike, especially on weekends. However, there is a severe lack of parking, which has affected traffic and urban order as people thus park vehicles on the sidewalks. Parking fees also skyrocket during the holidays.

Besides the parking lots, District 1 has also asked the city to let hotels and restaurants on Nguyen Hue Street sell beverages and fast food on the sidewalks starting this December as a trial. There are currently four hotels and 24 food and beverage establishments on the pedestrian route.
