Careers such as nurse practitioner, IT manager, and software developer rank among the top five STEM jobs in the U.S., according to U.S. News & World Report.

These jobs stand out for their competitive salaries and strong long-term career potential.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, approximately 10.7 million people worked in STEM-related fields in 2023, and this number is expected to increase by 10.4% by 2033.

The median salary for STEM jobs is $101,650, which is more than double the median wage for non-STEM occupations.

Here’s a closer look at the top five STEM jobs for 2025:

5. Information Security Analyst

Median Salary: $120,360

Job Growth (2023–2033): 32.7% (59,100 new jobs expected)

Overview: Information security analysts play a key role in safeguarding an organization’s computer systems against cyberattacks and data breaches.

"The opportunities are vast right now in the profession," Casey Cegielski, a professor at Auburn University who specializes in information security, and a partner at a cybersecurity consulting firm, wrote in an email. "Every organization needs security people who have a strong industry understanding and are willing to learn technical skills and continue to grow."

The majority of individuals working in this profession typically have a bachelor’s degree in computer and information technology, engineering, or mathematics.

4. Software Developer

Median Salary: $132,270

Job Growth (2023–2033): 17.9% (303,700 new jobs expected)

Overview:Software developers work across various industries, such as computer systems design, manufacturing, and finance.

3. Physician Assistant

Median Salary: $130,020

Job Growth (2023–2033): 28.5% (43,700 new jobs expected)

Overview: Physician assistants apply their medical knowledge to evaluate, diagnose, and treat patients, collaborating with other healthcare professionals to deliver comprehensive care.

2. IT Manager

Median Salary: $169,510

Job Growth (2023–2033): 17.4% (106,900 new jobs expected)

Overview: Information technology managers, also known as computer and information systems managers, guide organizations through the complexities of modern tech systems. They play a vital role in shaping both the immediate and long-term strategies for a company’s technological needs and objectives.

Although some of the most prominent roles are found in computer systems design, IT managers are in demand across nearly all sectors — particularly in finance, insurance, manufacturing, and government. As the healthcare industry continues to expand, its increasing reliance on digital systems is also expected to generate new IT management positions.

1. Nurse Practitioner

Median Salary: $126,260

Job Growth (2023–2033): 46.3% (135,500 new jobs expected)

Overview: Nurse practitioners, or advanced practice registered nurses, focus on providing care to specific groups of patients, often receiving specialized training in fields such as women’s health or pediatrics.
