China's Nio EC6 electric SUV breaks in half after collision with roadside concrete barrier. Video from Weibo
Dashcam footage shared on Weibo shows the Nio EC6 accelerating from the left lane before colliding with the car that recorded the video, which was traveling in the same direction.
The impact caused the SUV to lose control, spin sideways, and veer right into a roadside concrete divider.
The collision was so severe that the rear section of the vehicle detached from the cabin. Nio’s safety system immediately alerted the company’s emergency response team, which arrived at the scene and transported the two occupants to a hospital. Both were reported to be in stable condition, according to Car News China.
The EC6 is a mid-size battery electric coupe SUV manufactured by Shanghai-based EV maker Nio since 2020. According to the company, the EC6’s driver-assistance system was not active at the time of the crash.
After the collision, the vehicle’s doors automatically unlocked and its flush retractable door handles popped out, allowing the occupants to exit safely. The battery pack remained intact, showing no signs of ignition or other safety hazards.
A technical analysis of the crash indicated that the high-speed impact focused pressure on the narrow upper edge of the concrete divider, about 12 centimeters wide, which caused it to slice through the rear structure near the C-pillar and floor panel.
