The accident occurred on the morning of Nov. 26 when the Xiaomi EV SU7 was traveling on a mountain pass in Ganzhou, Jiangxi province.
According to local newspaper iFeng, both the driver and the passenger were minors who rented the EV without driving licenses.
Data revealed that the vehicle was speeding at the time of the crash.
The collision was so severe that the road barrier pierced directly into the vehicle’s cabin, killing the driver. The passenger is believed to have fled the scene after the incident.
This tragic incident highlights the gaps in China’s vehicle rental verification processes.
A national standard, effective from November, requires rental companies to verify drivers’ qualifications.
However, underage individuals continue to rent vehicles illegally by impersonating adults, using fake documents, or through online intermediaries, posing significant risks to road safety.
