Competing with six other swimmers in her group, Vien was third after the first 50 m, but dropped to sixth after 150 m and by 400 m, had fallen to the last position.
The 24-year-old finished the race in 9 minutes and 3.56 seconds, 31.95 seconds slower than the group’s first finisher Eve Thomas of New Zealand. The overall result of all four groups with 30 swimmers also placed Vien last in this category. The 800 m freestyle gold was won by American swimming star Kathleen Ledecky.
Vien’s result was not a surprise, considering this category is not her strength. She had qualified for the Olympics in early July this year and didn’t have much time to prepare either.
One of the most decorated swimmers in Vietnam, Vien has won 25 SEA Games gold medals, a continental title, a world silver medal and a bronze medal at the Asian Games.
