Ly Hoang Nam defeated the eighth seed, Illya Marchenko of Ukraine, in the second round of ATP Challenger Tour's Bangkok Open and moved to the quarterfinals on Wednesday.

Before the game, Marchenko was the favorite to win. The 35-year-old Ukrainian player is a veteran. He reached 49th in world rankings in 2016 and is currently at 308th, 20 places higher than Nam. But the Vietnamese number one displayed great fighting spirit to win the match.

In the first set, Nam lost 4-6 but came back with power in the second to win 6-1 and leveled the score.

The third set was the most intense as both players pulled out their best cards. After a struggling start with a few mistakes, Nam got himself together and leveled the score at 2-2.

The Vietnamese ace continued to take advantage of his profuse stamina, while Marchenko failed to keep up and let Nam lead 6-5. The Ukrainian player continued making mistakes while Nam utilized his powerful serves to finish the match with a victory after two hours and 34 minutes.

Nam's opponent in the next match will be first seed Alastair Gray of the U.K., ranked 256th in the world.

After great success on the ITF Men's World Tennis Tour with four consecutive titles and one runner-up medal within just two months, Nam's aim is to improve his ATP World Ranking in tournaments at a higher level.

Bangkok Open is a competition in the ATP Challenger Tour system with a prize pool of $37,520, which is much bigger than an ITF Men's World Tennis tournament. The event is taking place from August 22 to 29.
