The four-day event kicks off Thursday and 46 local and foreign pilots, including Japanese and Chinese paragliders, have signed up for the competition.
Contestants will take off from Si Thau Chai Village, part of Putaleng in Tam Duong District, located 1,400 meters above sea level, and later land at the district sport center.
Besides the paragliding tournament, one stationary hot air balloon and six mini equivalents will be available for visitors to float in at Tam Duong Stadium and Lai Chau Provincial People's Square.
Organizers said there would be a mini hot air balloon show on the final day of the tournament.
Putaleng XC Open, organized by Hanoi's Vietwings Paragliding Club, was recognized by World Air Sports Federation (FAI) and Vietnam Aviation Sports Association (VASA) as an international ranked event.
Eighty contestants from 16 countries and territories participated in the pilot event last year.
At 3,049 meters, Putaleng on Hoang Lien Son Mountain is Vietnam's second highest peak after Fansipan (3,143 meters).
