During an interview with Rio Ferdinand on his YouTube channel, Cristiano Ronaldo was said to have taken a joking dig at the late Brazilian legend Pele about the number of goals in his career.

"I want to reach 1,000 goals. If I don't have injuries, this, for me, is the most important. I want that," Ronaldo said during an interview with his former Manchester United teammate on his YouTube channel UR · Cristiano on Wednesday.

"It's the best marker I can have in football. There will be one difference: all of my goals have videos, so I can prove that."

Ferdinand laughed as he said: "You're a bas***d. You're talking about Alfredo Di Stefano, Pele, Eusebio."

Ronaldo then continued to joke: "If you want more goals, I can bring them from training too."

Ronaldo did not mention Pele or any other player in this conversation, but according to the British newspaper Daily Mail, the 39-year-old striker was taking a dig at the late Pele or other football legends of the past. On his Instagram account, Pele calls himself "The highest goal scorer of all time" with 1,283 goals and is recognized by Guinness World Records.

Ronaldo publicly claimed that he had surpassed Pele's record of 757 goals in March 2021. The Al Nassr captain as of present has scored 899 goals in 1,235 matches, holding the record according to the International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS), excluding club friendlies.

Another Brazilian player, Romario, is also estimated by the IFFHS to have scored 968 goals in 1,188 matches, including club friendlies. If club friendlies are not counted, the 58-year-old player has scored 755 goals.

Ronaldo and Ferdinand were teammates at Man Utd from 2003-2009, winning the Champions League in 2008 and three Premier League titles together. Ferdinand was the first person chosen to do an interview with Ronaldo on the Portuguese star's new YouTube channel, which he created a week ago. To date, the channel has garnered over 50 million subscribers.
