Cristiano Ronaldo's stoppage-time penalty miss flew into the stands, knocking a boy's phone off his hand, as Al Nassr were eliminated from the King's Cup in Saudi Arabia.

In the sixth minute of injury time in the second half, Ronaldo took a penalty with power but it went over the bar, as Al Nassr were trailing 0-1 to Al Taawoun in the round of 16 on Tuseday afternoon (local time).

Behind the goal, dozens of spectators in Al Awal Park Stadium in Riyadh raised their phones to record the moment. When they saw the ball flying closer, many ducked down to avoid it.

However, a boy holding a phone did not react in time, so the ball hit his arm. His phone also knocked off and hit the ground. He fell backwards, but was not seriously injured.

According to BBO Sports, Ronaldo gave the boy a new gold-plated iPhone 16 Pro Max as compensation after learning about the incident. However, he still could not avoid being teased on social media.

"Phone companies like Apple or Samsung will have a policy of not paying insurance if customers come to watch Ronaldo play," commented an account on X.

Another account commented sarcastically: "At least Ronaldo has broken something, even though they are not records."

Many other users pointed out that this is not the first time Ronaldo has hurt people with a set-piece.

In a friendly match with AFC Bournemouth in England in July 2013, Ronaldo, while playing for Real Madrid, broke a boy's wrist with a free kick. In September 2023, his free kick hit the head of a cameraman behind the goal.

This was the first time Ronaldo had missed a penalty for Al Nassr, after 19 consecutive successful attempts.

In all competitions, he has also successfully taken four consecutive penalties, since missing against Slovenia in the round of 16 of Euro 2024 in Germany. This time, his miss was more crucial, as it led to Al Nassr being eliminated from the King's Cup, the national cup of Saudi Arabia.

Ronaldo's penalty knocks the phone off a fan's hand during the King's Cup game in Al Awal Park Stadium in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on Oct. 29, 2024.
