According to A Bola, the theft occurred on Sept. 20, while Martinez and his family were away. A butler working in the basement spotted the intruder but was unable to prevent the theft. Portuguese authorities are investigating the case, though no arrests have been made so far.
Portugal's PSP police force is said to be focusing on the theory that it was carried out by a foreign gang specializing in high-end property heists, The Sun reported.
Martinez, a Spanish coach, has been in charge of Portugal since January 2023. Under his leadership, the team have recorded 23 wins, 5 draws, and 4 losses, achieving a career-high win rate of 71.88%. He guided Portugal to the quarterfinals of Euro 2024, secured the 2025 Nations League title, and currently lead Group F in the World Cup qualifiers.
Previously, Martinez managed Belgium from 2016 to 2022, achieving a 70% win rate with 56 victories, 13 draws, and 11 defeats. During his tenure, Belgium won the bronze medal at the 2018 World Cup and reached the quarterfinals of Euro 2021, though he left after Belgium were eliminated in the 2022 World Cup group stage.
At club level, Martinez enjoyed success with Swansea City, winning the EFL League Two in the 2007-2008 season. He also led Wigan Athletic to the FA Cup in the 2012-2013 season and Everton to fifth in the 2013-2014 Premier League.
As a player, Martinez was a defensive midfielder for Real Zaragoza, Wigan and Swansea, retiring in 2007 without making an appearance for Spain.
Cascais and other parts of Portugal are known for high rates of crimes such as pickpocketing, robbery, and theft, particularly targeting wealthy sports figures who are frequently away from home due to their careers.
