SEA Games: Vietnam win swimming gold after Schooling's team disqualified

Vietnamese won 15 more SEA Games gold medals in swimming, athletics, rowing, fencing and wushu Saturday, raising their gold tally to 39.

Vietnam were awarded a gold medal in 4×100 m freestyle relay. They only finished third in 3:21:18 minutes, but the first-place team, Singapore, which included Olympic medalist Joseph Schooling, were disqualified after a member committed a violation. The second-placed team from Malaysia faced the same outcome.

Star swimmer Nguyen Huy Hoang won a gold medal in 1,500 m freestyle. Swimmer Pham Thanh Bao won a gold medal in 100 m breaststroke, setting a SEA Games record by finishing in 1:1:17 minutes.

Vietnamese rowing athletes won four gold medals. Pham Thi Hue earned one in women's heavyweight single sculls; Luong Thi Thao and Dinh Thi Hao in women's lightweight pair two-row; Pham Thi Thao and Nguyen Thi Giang in women's heavyweight pair two-row; Pham Thi Ngoc Anh, Le Thi Hien, Ha Thi Vui, and Du Thi Bong in women's quadruple sculls.

Athletics also brought Vietnam four gold medals Saturday. Luong Duc Phuoc won a gold in men's 1,000 m and Nguyen Hoai Van in javelin throw.

Runner Nguyen Thi Oanh won two gold medals in women's 1,500 m and 5,000 m events at My Dinh Stadium in Hanoi.

Duong Thuy Vi won her second wushu gold medal at the 31st SEA Games, Nguyen Tien Nhat won a gold in fencing, and Tran Hoang Duy Thuan won a gold in bodybuilding.

In basketball, both the women and men teams beat their Indonesian opponents in the qualifiers Saturday to enter the finals, where the men were defeated by Thailand.

Vietnam also competed in triathlon, golf, tennis, pencak silat, chess, gymnastics, xiangqi, billiard, sepak takraw, volleyball, and table tennis Saturday.
