SEA Games: Vietnam win 11 more gold medals

Vietnam concluded Friday with 11 gold medals in karate, table tennis, weightlifting, chess and more.

Nguyen Duc Tuan won the first table tennis gold for Vietnam after 19 years when he defeated Thailand's Phakpoom Sanguansin 4-1 in the final.

In the men's futsal,Vietnam couldn't clinch a gold medal after losing 0-2 to Thailand in the final game.

Before the game with Thailand, Vietnam only needed a draw to keep their first place and secure the gold medal. But they couldn't achieve the target as Thailand put two past them to take the top spot, while Vietnam settled for a bronze medal, behind Indonesia.

In Judo, Chu Duc Dat and Nguyen Thi Thanh Thuy brought two gold medals to Vietnam. The karate team of four also claimed the gold medal in the women's kumite team event. Vietnam concluded their run in SEA Games karate with a total of seven gold, two silver and six bronze medals.

Also on Friday, the men's volleyball team won 3-2 against Thailand in the semifinals to play Indonesia in the final two days later.

Phi Thanh Thao won a shooting gold medal in the women's 50m rifle 3 positions event by beating opponents from Thailand and Singapore.

In chess, Le Tuan Minh beat grandmaster Le Quang Liem to win gold in rapid chess event.

Pham Le Thao Nguyen beat her Indonesian opponent Sihite Chelsie Monica Ignesias to win another gold for chess.

Vietnam also won a gold medal each in xiangqi and canoeing, and two gold medals in Vovinam.

In weightlifting, Dinh Xuan Hoang won a bronze medal in the men's 67kg event by lifting 306 kg. Thailand's Witsanu Chantri lifted 312kg to win the gold medal. Hoang Thi Duyen established a new record in SEA Games when she lifted 96 kg in her third lift.

Earlier weightlifter Nguyen Ngoc Trung also won a bronze medal in men's 61kg, where Indonesia won gold and Malaysia silver.
