There will be 17 public holidays next year, including weekends and those that fall on weekends for which there are compensatory days off.

The biggest holiday, the Lunar New Year, is expected to be Feb. 8 to 14, or starting two days before the New Year, according to a proposal by the Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs that is likely to be approved.

The Independence Day (Sep. 2) holidays will last four days starting on Aug. 31, a Saturday.

The New Year (Jan. 1) falls on a Monday, meaning three days off straight.

The Reunification Day and Labor Day holidays are on Apr. 30 and May 1 and the Hung Kings Anniversary on Apr. 18.

The ministry said businesses are recommended to close on these holidays, and employees working on these days should get at least triple their normal wages.
