Two Dong Nai Province officials have been arrested for allegedly taking bribes to move ineligible families into relocation housing meant for people displaced by the Long Thanh airport construction.

Nguyen Viet Manh, who works at the Land Fund Development Center in Long Thanh District in the southern province, and Nguyen Tan Bien, a land administration official in Long Thanh’s Binh Son Ward, were arrested on Wednesday.

A local woman is also in custody, but her identity has not been disclosed by the police, who said she worked as a broker for the two officials, bringing to them people who wanted to move into the Loc An-Binh Son relocation area.

She also collected the bribes for the two.

It is not clear how much money they have pocketed or how they managed to provide ownership documents to those paying bribes.

The police said they are expanding the investigation.

Long Thanh International Airport is being built at an estimated VND336.63 trillion (US$13.7 billion) with a designed capacity of 100 million passengers annually.

Its first phase, with a capacity of 25 million passengers, is scheduled to be completed by 2025.

So far all of the land needed for the project has been acquired, and Dong Nai has relocated 4,300 out of a total 5,647 affected households.
