Thousands of people left Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City on Friday evening ahead of a five-day holiday, causing gridlocks at major gateways.

Ring Road 3 in Hanoi is stuck at 4 p.m. on Friday with people leaving the city. The route connects the city's center with Noi Bai airport, Phu Tho and Vinh Phuc provinces, as well as the Hanoi - Lao Cai expressway leading to popular resort town Sa Pa.

Vietnamese take a five day break for the Reunification Day and Labor Day this year, from April 27 to May 1.

Khuat Duy Tien - Nguyen Xien intersection in Hanoi's Thanh Xuan District is packed with cars after 5 p.m.

In Ho Chi Minh City, the National Highway 1 in Binh Chanh District also saw an increasing number of people leaving the city after office hours.

Heavy gridlock is seen on both ways of HCMC - Trung Luong Expressway, which connects the city with the Mekong Delta, at 5 p.m.

A traffic police officer said a large number of people were leaving the city for their hometowns in the delta, while on the other way, empty buses were traveling to HCMC to pick up more passengers and trucks were carrying food supplies to serve HCMC consumers during the holiday.

Tan Son Nhat airport is estimated to serve more than 115,000 passengers on 671 flights on Friday, nearly twice its normal traffic and most of them domestic flights.

Saigon Railway Station in District 3 also saw a surge in passengers.

Le Anh Tuan, a manager of the station, said there are 13 train trips serving around 6,000 passengers on Friday.

Transport agencies have reported an increase of railway passengers this holiday as many seek to avoid the high airfares.
